چکیده

We formulate discrete-time stage-structured models, based on systems of difference equations, for mosquito populations. We include the four distinct mosquito metamorphic stages, egg, pupa, larva, and adult, in the models. We derive a formula for the inherent net reproductive number, and investigate existence and stability of fixed points. We also show that the models, by means of numerical simulations, exhibit richer dynamics.

Stage - structured models for interacting wild and sterile mosquitoes

Using the sterile insect technique,in which sterile mosquitoes are released to reduce or eradicate the wild mosquito population,is an effective weapon to prevent transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. To study the impact of the sterile insect technique on the disease transmissions,we formulate stage-structured discrete-time mathematical models, based on difference equations, for the interactive...

The Effect of Temperature on Anopheles Mosquito Population Dynamics and the Potential for Malaria Transmission

The parasites that cause malaria depend on Anopheles mosquitoes for transmission; because of this, mosquito population dynamics are a key determinant of malaria risk. Development and survival rates of both the Anopheles mosquitoes and the Plasmodium parasites that cause malaria depend on temperature, making this a potential driver of mosquito population dynamics and malaria transmission. We dev...

Simplifying a physiologically structured population model to a stage-structured biomass model.

We formulate and analyze an archetypal consumer-resource model in terms of ordinary differential equations that consistently translates individual life history processes, in particular food-dependent growth in body size and stage-specific differences between juveniles and adults in resource use and mortality, to the population level. This stage-structured model is derived as an approximation to...

Dynamics of Stage-structured Population Models with Harvesting Pulses

In most models of population dynamics, changes in population due to birth or harvesting are assumed to be time-independent, but many species reproduce or are caught only during a single period of the year. In this paper a single species stage-structured model with density-dependent maturation rate, birth pulse and harvesting pulse is formulated. Using the discrete dynamical system determined by...

The importance of temperature fluctuations in understanding mosquito population dynamics and malaria risk

Temperature is a key environmental driver of Anopheles mosquito population dynamics; understanding its central role is important for these malaria vectors. Mosquito population responses to temperature fluctuations, though important across the life history, are poorly understood at a population level. We used stage-structured, temperature-dependent delay-differential equations to conduct a detai...
